Gopro warranty & return policy — and how to actually claim it
Every line below is quoted from Gopro's own published policy and linked to the source. If something you bought is covered, Owed's agent can draft and send the claim for you.
Warranty
12 monthsstated window
GoPro guarantees its cameras against manufacturing defects for one year from the original date of delivery — delivery, not purchase, which works in your favour on a pre-ordered or slow-shipped camera. GoPro's sole obligation is to repair or replace the defective part or product with a comparable one at its own discretion. The exclusion that surprises people is water housing leakage: because a user can reseal a housing incorrectly, GoPro expressly does not warrant against housing leakage or any damage resulting from it, which for an action camera is the single most likely way it dies. Damage from use, accident or normal wear and tear is likewise not covered. Separately, GoPro offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on gopro.com webstore purchases — no questions asked, but merchandise must be in like-new condition, return shipping charges may apply, and shipping fees are not refundable. Note that returns or replacements may attract shipping, handling, replacement and restocking fees.
In their own words
“GoPro products are guaranteed against manufacturing defects one (1) year from the original date of delivery. GoPro’s sole obligation in the event of such defects during this period is to repair or replace the defective part or product with a comparable part or product at GoPro’s sole discretion.”
GoPro Warranty
“Damage resulting from use, accident, or normal wear and tear is not covered by this or any warranty.”
GoPro Warranty — wear and tear
“Because of possible user resealing errors, this product is not warranted against water housing leakage or any resulting damage.”
GoPro Warranty — water housings
“If, at any time, within 30 days of receiving your order, you are not 100% satisfied, you may return it to us for a refund, no questions asked. All merchandise must be in like-new condition, and any items damaged due to reasons not covered under warranty cannot be accepted back for refund under our Money Back Guarantee.”
Money Back Guarantee (GoPro Webstore Purchases)
“For warranty evaluation, your product must be accompanied by an explanation and receipt. All shipping for warranty evaluation must be pre-paid and insured. GoPro cannot be liable for lost inbound packages.”
Warranty evaluation
What they exclude
- Damage resulting from use, accident, or normal wear and tear
- Water housing leakage or any resulting damage — excluded because of possible user resealing errors
- Improperly used, abused, altered or repaired products
- Incidental or consequential damages relating to or resulting from use of the product
- Returns or replacements may be subject to shipping, handling, replacement and restocking fees
- Inbound shipping for warranty evaluation is at your cost and risk
How to file
Get a return authorization at gopro.com/help before shipping anything — GoPro requires one. Your product must arrive with a written explanation and the receipt, and all inbound shipping must be pre-paid and insured, because GoPro states it cannot be liable for lost inbound packages. If the damage turns out not to be covered, GoPro may still repair or replace it for a reasonable fee rather than simply returning it. If you are within 30 days of a gopro.com order and the camera is like-new, the money-back guarantee is the faster route than a warranty claim.

If they say no
A first refusal is not the end — most claims that get paid are the ones that got answered a second time. The ladder that works:
- Reply in the same thread quoting the exact policy line above, with your order number and the date. Ask for a supervisor or a formal complaint reference.
- Escalate to an executive contact if support stalls — a specific, documented request outperforms an angry one.
- Use your payment rail: a card chargeback for "not as described" or "item not received" (typically within 60 days of the statement under the US Fair Credit Billing Act, and up to 120 days under card-network rules — confirm the exact window with your issuer), or a PayPal dispute.
- For lost or damaged shipments, file a claim with the carrier directly.
- Escalate externally: the selling platform's guarantee, BBB, your state attorney general, or the FTC. Small claims is the last resort.
