Darn Tough warranty & return policy — and how to actually claim it
Every line below is quoted from Darn Tough's own published policy and linked to the source. If something you bought is covered, Owed's agent can draft and send the claim for you.
Warranty
Darn Tough socks carry an unconditional lifetime guarantee. Wear a hole in them and they are replaced free of charge, including inadvertent damage — as of May 21, 2024 the previously listed warranty conditions were removed. No receipt, proof of purchase, or product registration is required; the socks themselves are the claim. You ship the worn pair back and receive an emailed credit code for the full replacement value.
In their own words
“If these aren’t the longest lasting socks you’ve ever owned, you can return them to us for another pair. No receipt needed, just the pair in question.”
Unconditionally Guaranteed for Life
“If they are not the most comfortable, durable and best-fitting socks you can buy. In a nutshell, if you wear a hole in them, we will replace them free of charge.”
FAQ — What does your warranty cover?
“If your socks are inadvertently damaged. As long as we can tell that they were once a pair of Darn Tough socks, our warranty will apply.”
FAQ — What does your warranty cover?
“No sock registration required. All you need when filing a warranty claim with us are the socks. We knit our name on all our socks, so we know where they came from, no receipts or proof of purchase required.”
FAQ — Do I need to register my socks?
“Please note that socks purchased as seconds or irregulars are not covered by our warranty.”
Warranty conditions
“No, when a customer alters the sock in any way, through resizing or dyeing, they have voided our warranty.”
FAQ — Altered socks
What they exclude
- Socks purchased as seconds or irregulars are not covered
- Socks altered by the customer through resizing or dyeing — this voids the warranty
- Enough of the sock must remain to identify it as a Darn Tough sock
- International claims must be submitted in the country where you are located, via the local distributor
How to file
Fill out the online warranty claim form, ship the socks with the completed form using the cheapest method (usually USPS Ground Advantage), and Darn Tough emails a credit code for the full replacement value. Multiple pairs can go on one claim. Claims are processed in about 7-10 business days. Select retailers also accept in-store warranty exchanges.

If they say no
A first refusal is not the end — most claims that get paid are the ones that got answered a second time. The ladder that works:
- Reply in the same thread quoting the exact policy line above, with your order number and the date. Ask for a supervisor or a formal complaint reference.
- Escalate to an executive contact if support stalls — a specific, documented request outperforms an angry one.
- Use your payment rail: a card chargeback for "not as described" or "item not received" (typically within 60 days of the statement under the US Fair Credit Billing Act, and up to 120 days under card-network rules — confirm the exact window with your issuer), or a PayPal dispute.
- For lost or damaged shipments, file a claim with the carrier directly.
- Escalate externally: the selling platform's guarantee, BBB, your state attorney general, or the FTC. Small claims is the last resort.
Owed reads your receipts, tracks every warranty clock, drafts the claim citing the terms above, and follows up until you're paid. Free to start.
Policies change. We re-verify these terms regularly and show the date each was checked, but always confirm current terms on Darn Tough's own site before relying on them. Owed is not a law firm and this page is not legal advice.
